Keratin vs Smoothening: Which Is Right for You?

The Big Decision

Both keratin and smoothening are among the most requested treatments at any Indian salon, and for good reason — they both promise the holy grail of frizz-free, manageable, salon-beautiful hair every single day. But despite often being used interchangeably in conversation, these are fundamentally different treatments that work in different ways, suit different hair types, and come with very different levels of commitment.

Making the wrong choice can mean months of dissatisfaction with your hair. So let us break down exactly what each treatment does, who it is best for, and what you should expect.

Keratin Treatment: The Natural Enhancer

A keratin treatment works by coating each hair strand with a layer of keratin protein — the same protein your hair is naturally made of. The treatment is applied as a liquid, blow-dried into the hair, and then sealed with a flat iron. The result is a protective shell around each strand that dramatically reduces frizz, adds intense shine, and makes hair more manageable.

Duration: 3-5 months, fading gradually with each wash.

Maintenance: Use sulphate-free shampoo to extend the life of the treatment. Avoid salt water and chlorine pools for the first two weeks.

Best for: Wavy to curly hair where you want to keep some natural texture and movement. Keratin does not make your hair pin-straight — it smooths and softens your natural pattern while eliminating frizz.

Damage level: Low to moderate. A quality keratin treatment actually adds protein to your hair, which can strengthen it. However, the heat-sealing step does cause some stress, so proper aftercare is important.

Smoothening (Rebonding): The Structural Change

Smoothening, also called rebonding, uses a chemical solution to permanently break and reform the internal bonds of your hair structure. This fundamentally alters your hair from its natural texture to stick-straight. The result is pin-straight, sleek, glossy hair that stays that way until new growth appears.

Duration: Permanent on treated hair. New growth will have your natural texture, creating a visible line of demarcation that needs retouching every 6-8 months.

Maintenance: Higher commitment. You must avoid tying your hair tightly for the first week. Regular deep conditioning is essential because the chemical process strips significant moisture. You will need touch-up sessions as new hair grows in.

Best for: People who genuinely want permanently straight hair and are prepared for the ongoing maintenance. If you have always dreamed of sleek, poker-straight hair and are willing to invest in upkeep, smoothening delivers unmatched results.

Damage level: Moderate to high. The chemical process weakens the hair structure, and repeated treatments compound this damage. Hair that has been coloured or bleached may not be suitable for smoothening.

Cost Comparison

Keratin treatments typically range from Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000 depending on hair length and the product used. Smoothening ranges from Rs 4,000 to Rs 12,000. While smoothening has a higher upfront cost, keratin needs to be repeated every few months, so the annual cost may be similar.

Our Expert Recommendation

For most Indian hair types, we recommend starting with keratin. It is less damaging, more natural-looking, reversible, and gives you a chance to experience smoother hair without a permanent commitment. Many clients who try keratin first find it gives them exactly what they wanted without needing to go further.

Smoothening is the right choice if you have always wanted bone-straight hair, you understand the maintenance commitment, and your hair is healthy enough to handle the chemical process. We always perform a thorough hair health assessment before recommending smoothening.

Book a consultation and our experts will examine your hair type, assess its current condition, discuss your goals, and recommend the perfect treatment for you.
